ZUREYA:THE MUSIC LADY WHO IS ALSO A PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECT.
Zureya is a musician, contemporary dancer and poet, who is also an architect by training. She is a former student of the Kenya Conservatoire of Music, Nairobi. Here she took singing and classical piano playing classes. She sat for the ABRSM Conservatoire International exams and passed with merit. However, her practical singing training was obtained from singing and practicing with bands at various restaurants in Nairobi and Mombasa. She is currently working on her first album having released her first single, “May Your Light.” This song was recorded at Kassongo studios in Nairobi and the video done by Mo Creative in Mombasa. Her second single, “Drugs aren’t cool”, was adopted by the anti-drug awareness group, Elements Arts, as their theme song. Her third single, "Kenya" was done in collaboration with a Coast-based musician called Escobar babake. She also trained in contemporary dance with Sarakasi Dancers in Nairobi. And currently runs a dance training programme called Fire For Arts In Africa (FFAIA) which is based at the Little Theatre Club, Mombasa. Zureya’s live performances often fuse her poetry with dance and music, in order to create various thematic effects. She exhibits a very physical form of poetry whereby together with her dance team, they use more than just words to express themselves.
