Mombasa has been on the news lately for all the wrong reasons. Bestiality and child pornography perpetrated by foreigners, high rate of school dropouts, polyandry and witchcraft are just some of the ills that bedevil this county. That aside, the scandal ravaged coastal city of Mombasa has also its good side. The beautiful beaches attract tourists like moths to a flame. Tourism is the largest foreign exchange source after agriculture. The showbiz industry is also alive with the likes of Nyota Ndogo, Cannibal and Sharama making a big impact beyond the confines of Mombasa. Here are some of the big time entertainers from the coastal city of Mombasa.

 

1.Ally B
Ally B is one of the hottest lyricists from the Coast region. The father of two has been phenomenal with back to back hits that have placed him in the pedestal of the finest acts in Kenya. The multi-talented coasterian is adept at acting, songwriting, dancing, nurturing upstart artists making him an all rounded artist. Ally B has been a past winner of the Nzumari awards for the Best Male Artist and Song of the Year Awards.



 

2.Susumila
Sumumila aka Yusuf Kombo rap skills are undeniable. His rise to fame was propelled by his two albums Ngangari and Haki Iko Wapi that cemented his position as the best MC in Mombasa. The artist from the hood of Bombolulu Bankhead Zone has had his fair share of controversy with rumors doing rounds in Coast radio stations that he was associated with the Illuminate secret society. His mother’s death further fuelled this speculations and the fact that he moved to a posh house in Kilifi. Susumila has denied those allegations as mere rumors designed to tarnish his reputation.

 

 

3.Chikuzee
This young artist is upsetting the music status quo in the coast region thanks to his powerful vocals. Suleiman Chikuku Abdallah, better known by his stage name Chikuzee has been pelting hits after hit. His hits have been receiving wide rotation on the coast radio stations. Music pundits have likened him to Tanzania sensation Juma Nature who is one of the artists Chikuzee emulates.

 

3.Prince Adio
His song “Nikiwa Ndani” made the Benga maestro from Mombasa an overnight sensation. The song transcended the coast region and become popular across the country. Prince Adio hit made him a darling of politicians becoming a permanent fixture during the 2002 general elections campaigns where performed. The coast based artists has not replicated the same fete and we are waiting to see if he will make a comeback.


4.Nyota Ndogo
She’s one of the most successful artists in Kenya and the finest from the coast city. Her rise to stardom reads like her novel. She started out as a house girl before her nascent talent was discovered by coast based producer Andrew Burchel. Her impressive vocal abilities brought her instant fame and established artists like Nonini where trouping to do a collabo with her. Nyota Ndogo broke the jinx of most Mombasa artists and made it big beyond the confines of coast. She has three albums under her belt and has hits that have topped the charts both in Kenya and the wider East African region. Some of her songs include watu na viatu. She is also won many awards including Kisima Award for best Taarab singer in 2003 and Best female singer in 2005.


 

5.Tiera Gee
She has a million dollar voice and the way she gyrates on stage is not short of genius. Her killer looks, sense of fashion and humility further endears to her legion of fans. The self-proclaimed queen of chakacha from the coastal city of Mombasa won the coveted Kenya Coast Music Awards for Best Female Artist of the Year in 2010. This year Tiera Gee bagged the Diaspora Artist of the year Award at the just concluded Kenya Coast Music awards. Her latest single Pepeta featuring Parroty is riding high on Kenya local radio stations.
